KLIER MAKES IT TWO FOR T-MOBILE IN SPAIN

German Andreas Klier secured T-Mobile’s 10th ProTour win of the season on Friday when he took T-Mobile’s second stage victory in the Tour of Spain. Cunning tactics in a tense two-man final sprint - coupled with some strong legs - gave the 29-year-old Klier his first victory since taking the Ghent-Wevelgem Classic in 2003 as he outclassed Dutchman Tom tamsnijder.
The two had taken off with Frenchman Jeremy Roy - dropped close to the finale - in the first hour of racing and then after opening up a sizeable gap on the bunch batttled it out in the final kilometre. Overall leader of the race remains Denis Menchov of Russia.
Following Bert Grabsch win in the stage eight time trial in Zaragoza, Klier’s victory is T-Mobile’s second in less than a week in cycling’s final Grand Tour of the season. “This is a good win to start me getting motivated for the 2008 season.” Klier told Giant’s website. “To be honest, this hasn’t been a good year for me, because a bad crash wrecked my Classics season.”
“But now I’ve got this win, it’s like a new start.” Appropriately enough for a Classics rider, Klier took his win in weather more typical of April one-day races than the usual Spanish late summer heat. Hail and rain lashed the Tour of Spain - for the first time this year - in the 176.4 kilometre stage from Hellín to Torre Pacheco, only lifting in time for the finish.
“I don’t mind the weather, in fact it motivates me more when it’s wet!” Klier, who crossed the line kissing a medal given to him by his son to bring him luck in races. Klier’s win is T-Mobile’s 60th for the men’s and women’s teams in 2007 and tenth in the prestigious ProTour series, as well as their third in a major Tour this season. The Tour of Spain ends on Sept. 23rd in Madrid.
